ALM Research published its first-ever Survey of Law Firm Outsourcing (you can download the order form here) this year, which studied the prevalence of outsourcing administrative and technology support in law firms. We found, for instance, that more than half of responding firms had been outsourcing some functions for five or more years—most frequently functions related to documents.
ALM’s The American Lawyer published the results of its first-ever survey of the use of temporary lawyer (Invisible Army) in its September 2006 issue. Of the 42 firms that responded (of Am Law 200 firms), more than 75% “said they relied on [temps] more in 2005 than in the previous year. As noted in the story, The National Law Journal’s most current NLJ 250 survey (2005) found that the use of temp attorneys doubled between 2002 and 2003; increased 48% from 2003 to 2004, and then 13% from 2004 to 2005. The new NLJ250 report will be published in November.
