On-line Instructional Video: Searching the EDGAR Database

As mentioned on the Stark County Law Library Blog, this 10-minute video on How to Search the EDGAR Database explains how to use the Securities and Exchange Commission's EDGAR database, covering both basic and advanced search features. You may use the table of contents to go directly to certain parts of the video, but this feature only works after the screencast loads completely. The video is part of Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll’s Virtual Chase Library.

As explained by site author Charles Knight, “alternative” means that each entrant exhibits at least one characteristic that surpasses the equivalent feature in one of the major search engines.

DOJ's FOIA Guide

The Dept. of Justice has put on their web site The Freedom of Information Act Guide, which provide, according to their site, an "overview discussion of the FOIA's exemptions, its law enforcement record exclusions, and its most important procedural aspects."  The link above takes you to a handy Table of Contents, each linked to the pertinent chapter.

Salaries: Executive Compensation at Nonprofits

The Economic Research Institute has built a handy little search engine for researching executive compensation at nonprofit organizations, with information from Forms 990, 990PF, and 990EZ. The free data also includes snapshots of each organization's revenue, assets, and contributions.

This handy, free, quick-search web site is brought to you by the AFL-CIO. It's called the 2007 Executive PayWatch and allows you to search by ticker symbol or company name. Your search yields information about CEO compensation at U.S. corporations, along with comparisons showing CEO vs. worker pay and CEO vs. compensation for the President. Several free reports are also offered, such as Trends in CEO pay, information about the new SEC disclosure rules, and Golden Goodbyes-information about the generous exit packages paid to departing CEOs.

Law.com Launches New Search Engine - and Wants Your Feedback

ALM's Law.com has just launched a new search tool called Law.com Quest, which aims to bring legal professionals and researchers relevant results from across the Law.com network, from law firm websites, and from legal blogs. While it's still in the "beta phase," Law.com is eager to get feedback.

What's different about this search engine? Instead of returning hundreds of thousands of results, or requiring you to construct elaborate Boolean queries, Quest starts with an index of relevant sites and lets you filter your results by category to help you quickly zero in on the information you need.

Law.com will be gradually fine-tuning this engine and adding more and more legal sites to the crawl.  In addition to letting them know how Quest worked for you, they welcome suggestions for sites to add or new categories to build. You can send your thoughts, comments, suggestions (and criticisms) to [email protected] or use the feedback form on the top right of the results pages.

ALM Research Blog Adds AmLaw 200 Interactive Map

Check this out: ALM Research tech-meister Shannon Holman has added an interactive map of AmLaw 200 firms to the ALM Research Blog site. This great new feature gives you, at a glance, the headquarters location of the 200 highest-grossing U.S. firms (although the giant blended firm, DLA Piper is based in both the UK and US), along with their gross revenue and rank from the most recently-reported Am Law 200, links to the firm's web site, and a link to a Law Firm Report, available through ALM Research Online.  Very cool.
